Quarterly Classes

Drop-In Classes

Students can drop-in to a Basic level class without prior enrollment. In Q1 and Q3 (non-performance quarters), students are welcome to drop-in to the first or second class of the quarter. In Q2 and Q4 (performance quarters), students can drop in to the first class only. We do not allow drop-ins for classes that are Intermediate level or higher.

If a class is full, we will not be able to accommodate drop-in students. Check the status of classes here.

Students under 18 years of age require a guardian to sign them into the class, without which, a student will not be able to participate in the drop-in class.

Age Groups

Our classes are for kids ages 3&4 (Bacha Party), 5-8, 9-12, teens and adults. We often have students who are well into their 60s also join our classes! Depending on physical conditions, we also have a special ‘Jollywood’ class for seniors at the India Community Center in Milpitas. Read more about Jollywood.

Attire and Shoes

Students should come to class in comfortable clothing that is easy to move in like workout/track pants and t-shirts. Jeans are not allowed. Sneakers or dance shoes are required.

Costumes

Students enrolled in a performance quarter receive a costume for America’s Got Bollywood! We have lots of costume-related answers here.

What to Bring to Class

Students are required to bring a water bottle to class.

Attendance

Attending all classes is highly encouraged. If a student will be missing a class, they are requested to send an email to the instructor in advance.

During performance quarters, if a student misses more than one class, the student may not be allowed to participate in the showcase. Attending the last two classes before the performance as well as the technical rehearsal is mandatory during the performance quarter.

There are no make up sessions or pro-rated fees for any missed classes.

Class Levels

We have four levels: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and Master. Read more here.

All new students should register for the Basic level class in the appropriate age group. Students with prior dance experience may skip the Basic class – see more details in ‘Skipping Class Levels.’

For continuing students, based on the student performance at a level:

  1. The instructor may recommend a student for evaluation to a higher level class.
  2. The instructor may recommend a lower level that is appropriate for the student’s training and growth.

Evaluations for Class Promotions

New Students:

If a student has prior dance experience, they can attend an audition to be evaluated for a higher class.

Continuing Students:

Promotion to a higher level class is based on two things:

  1. Recommendation from instructor of current class level
  2. Passing a student evaluation conducted by our Evaluations Team every session
  3. Post promotion to a level, continuing in the class is subject to student performance at that level.

Skipping Class Levels

New students who have prior dance experience can choose to attend an audition to be evaluated for placement into a higher level class.

Continuing students: See section on ‘Evaluations for Class Promotions’

Taking a Break Between Quarters

If a student takes a break between quarters, they may re-join at the level they were previously enrolled in. If they take a break for four or more consecutive quarters, we recommend they enroll in a lower level class to refresh their technique.

If a student is promoted to a higher level class and takes a break for more than two quarters before joining the higher level class, they will be required to attend the student evaluations again.

America's Got Bollywood

Where and when is the show?

America’s Got Bollywood will be held at the Chabot College located at 25555 Hesperian Boulevard, Hayward, CA 94545. There are three shows on Sunday, Now 17 at 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM.

Who is performing in the show?

Several hundred students from the Bay Area, as well as the company’s highly acclaimed professional troupe which has an impressive repertoire, students from our specialty programs: Emerging Performers, Jeena students and senior citizens in the Jollywood program!

What is the Covid-19 protocol for the showcase?

Chabot Performing Arts Center no longer requires proof of vaccination against COVID-19 to enter the campus. Masks are strongly encouraged, however no longer required to be worn at the Chabot Performing Arts Center.

Can I photograph & record the event?

Photography is allowed, but please note that flash photography is distracting to the performers and is therefore not permitted. You may videotape only the student performances. Tripods/camera stands are not allowed in the seating area as they obstruct other people’s view.

Photographing and videotaping the troupe performances and the Emerging Performer (EP) is prohibited and this rule will be strictly enforced. Prior to these performances, the audience will be reminded of this rule.

Can I buy food at the venue?

Yes. Food will be available for purchase. Please note that food/drinks are not allowed in the auditorium.

What is 'PurplePass' and what is the ticket service fee?

Tickets can be purchased via the online ticketing service called ‘PurplePass’. A service fee of 2.5% on the ticket price + $0.99 is charged per ticket by PurplePass. This is standard practice for any ticketing service and PurplePass is one of the most cost effective ticketing services available in the market.

How can I purchase my tickets?

Tickets are available for purchase here until Nov 17

What payment methods are available, and are online transactions secure?

PurplePass accepts all major credit cards and PayPal.

Where are my tickets?

Your ticket will be emailed to the email address you provide. You can either print your ticket or just show it on your smartphone to be scanned.

If you do not receive an order confirmation email from PurplePass within 1 hour of your order, please contact tickets@monakhancompany.com as soon as possible.

Are refunds allowed?

Tickets are non-refundable. You are responsible for tickets received from PurplePass.

Are show seats assigned?

Yes, all seating is assigned. You can select your seats during the ticket purchase process.

Above what age is a "child" charged for a ticket?

Children aged 2 and above require a ticket. Children under 2 are admitted for free and may sit on someone’s lap at the theater but will not be allowed to occupy a seat if a ticket has not been purchased for them .

Is the ticket valid for more than one show?

No, a ticket is only valid for the show it was purchased for. Tickets are not transferable from one show to another.

Do students have to buy ticket to perform?

Students DO NOT have to buy a ticket to perform. They will be seated in the auditorium with the rest of their class! This ticket is non-transferable and must be used by the student only.

Students in the Bacha Party class will receive separate details from their instructors about tickets and seating.

Do students need a ticket to be allowed into the theater to watch the show?

The students (other than Bacha Party) do not need a ticket to be allowed into the theater to watch the show. However, they are required to check-in at the entry and get a hand stamp to enter the auditorium and sit with their class on the day of the show.

Bacha Party students will need to purchase a separate ticket. They are required to be seated next to their parents/family in their own seat for the duration of the show. More details will be sent by the instructors of the class closer to the show date.

Are parents allowed in the student holding area?

Parents/family/friends are not allowed because that space is reserved for student performers. We also want to keep the kids safe therefore anyone who has not signed in, cannot enter the backstage area.

When can students go to the auditorium to watch the show?

Students are required to report 30 minutes before the start of the show. Logistics of being seated with the class, performing and being re-seated after the class performs is handled by show staff. Detailed instructions will be provided before the show.

When can parents pick up their children?

Parents of 5-8, 9-12 and 13-18 students are not required to pick their children up after their child has performed and have the child sit with them, unless the parent has bought an extra ticket for their child. It is advised that parents let their kids sit with the rest of the class to watch the show after they have performed. At the end of the show, parents can check out their children.

Bacha Party students should be picked up by their parents after their performance. They are required to be seated next to their parents/family in their own seat for the duration of the show.

If a parent/child has to exit the auditorium during the show, please know that re-entry into the auditorium will be permitted before the start of the following act, so the performers on stage and the audience are not disturbed.
